How can we enhance the health and qualify of life of people in Galway City?

Health is created in our homes, communities, schools, workplaces, and wider environment. Issues such as education, income, employment, transport, housing, access to health services, and the environment all have an impact on health and wellbeing. Therefore the availability of healthy environments at home, work, and play and the provision of services to support people in their daily lives are essential. These were some of the issues that were explored at a one day conference in September 2007 which focused on how this potential could be achieved for all in Galway City.

The day focused on identifying what people feel are the issues that need to be addressed across a number topics including; education, transport, environment, social support, crime and safety, income and employment and health. A number of issues of practical solutions were identified in relation to what can be done in relation to a number of issues. In addition the need for better communication and co-ordination between all involved was also highlighted as well as the need to be innovative.

Over 60 people from across the City including residents groups, voluntary and community groups, and government departments came together to identify how we can enhance the health and qualify of life of all in Galway City. Professor Margaret Barry, Department of Health Promotion NUI, Galway addressed the conference providing the evidence in relation to where we live has a significant impact on our mental and physical health.
